Whenever I see a windmill, I’m automatically transported back to the farm in Kansas where my mom grew up (although, from my perspective, it’s the farm where we’d visit Grandma and ride horses and explore barns and pastures and other great stuff). They’re simple enough – wind turns the blades, which turns a central drive shaft, which powers a water pump or grinder or generator of some sort through gears and other connections. They’ve become an icon of farming in the Midwest, and sometimes they’re quite beautiful to watch (or capture in a photo!).
In case you’re wondering, this particular windmill was not on a farm, but rather in the middle of a busy outdoor shopping village in Pennsylvania…although, there was an active farm right across the street…
